ROGER 'HURRICANE' WILSON

Atlanta bluesman who has played with the greats

Roger "Hurricane" Wilson is a New Jersey native who went to college in Atlanta in the '60s and was inspired to play the guitar by seeing the Allman Brothers and listening to records by Robert Johnson and Elmore James. He formed his own band in 1978 and has been touring and playing clubs ever since, finding time to put out six albums and have a separate career as a radio broadcaster. Over the decades he's played with icons such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Albert Collins, Les Paul, Roy Buchanan, Dickie Betts, Little Feat, and Marshall Tucker. His style ranges from the simplest 12-bar riff into the wildest areas of psychedelic rock. He's appearing solo in his Landmark debut.

KEVIN SELFE & THE TORNADOES

High-energy blues from a Muddy Award nominee

Selfe, before moving to Portland two years ago from his base in Roanoke, Va., played over 1,500 gigs in 15 states, conquering a wide circle of East Coast venues. But his new start in the Northwest has given him a fresh outlook and he is getting some recognition, with two Muddy nominations from the Cascade Blues Association. He’s become something of a mainstay at the Landmark, giving a variety of performances, suitable to the crowd, the weather, the whatnot.

I-CHELE & THE CIRCLE OF LIGHT

Voted Eugene's best reggae band for 2007

The drifting rhythms of the reggae groove are hard to find in the land of the big trees, but they are there... or in this case, here. I-chele has put together a sensuous unit of sound and built it carefully over the years, never losing the spark. Vince Black adds that true Jamaican feel and a large and talented percussion section weaves that tropical balance. With Roger McConnell on guitar.

Rhodes cut his teeth in the blues with Johnny Clyde Copeland and Albert Collins in Texas clubs as a teenager in the late '50s and has been devoted to the music since. He's toured Europe several times, criss-crossed the United States and recently recorded the theme song for the Fox TV series "Firefly." Now based in California, Rhodes has recorded over 200 songs in his 37 year career. "I'm what you call a self-proclaimed disciple of the blues!" he declares. MIKE TRACEY BAND

Northwest Harmonica Champion 2007

Here’s a comeback story. After 10 years of musical inactivity, Mike started playing again in May 2006, entering the west Eugene Overtime Tavern blues jam with “a sack of rusty old marine bands.” By the next year Mike was blowing his harp in the Northwest championships at the Secret Garden, then, winning the contest. He also played at the Bill Rhodes blowoff at the 2007 Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland and is a frequent music jam host in Eugene.

DEADWOOD REVIVAL

Acoustic alt country, original and refreshing - from Port Angeles

The mix here is what might be called new-time/ old-time or maybe new legs for an old horse. The spirit is Appalachian with soulful American roots, and a lot of jamband improvisation. Jason Mogi (banjo and vocals) and Kim Trenerry (guitar and vocals) are the originals in the group, he from California via the rock/jam scene, she from Georgia with a hill country background right out of a Carter family picnic. The newbie is Ches Ferguson, a Deadhead from the old days, now adding that bass line to the spry sharp harmonies. This band also brings a wealth of good cheer and energy from its base in Port Angeles, Wash. With a new member and a new CD ("This Old World") this new theme just keeps on keepin' on.

BOLT UPRIGHT

Three-piece blues band brings in the R&B and funk from Portland

This group is the child of Ashbolt Stewart, a 35-year veteran drummer. Born in Detroit, Ash grew up in Milwaukee and in 1972 moved to California in a purple school bus, where he spent about 20 years gigging. Since leaving Sonoma County for Portland in the 90's, he worked with several local bands, coming to be the driving force behind the Norman Sylvester Band for ten years. His wife, Susie, plays electric bass and been writing some tunes, like "Hot Shot Blues." They are joined by guitarist Ken Brewer, fresh from a stint in the Robbie Laws band, Hoodoo Nation.

JUPITER HOLLOW

Jam rock, roots and fusion, healing the planet

This band pulled a reverse Kesey and drove a hippie bus across the Rockies to Eugene. The group started in 1992 in Missouri, originally known as Sojourn. It built a following playing at festivals, performing a play list of original music written by Randy Probst. Eight years later, around the turn of the century, Randy, Heather Lamb and Jake Killingsworth moved west, the bus broke down in Eugene and the rest is history. They play a rock fusion, jam style that puts a big ol' smile on everybody's face. Heal on, brothers and sisters!

KOLVANE

Rockin' Portland blues band winning awards and followers

In four years singer/songwriter Kolvane moved the Rose City Kings from obscurity to notoriety, winning Muddy awards, releasing three critically acclaimed albums; touring behind Chicago blues legend Jody Williams and gaining entry into the Top 50 Roots Music Report in the Roots Blues category. Last year the Kings morphed into the band Kolvane and this spring toured the West (from Biscuits & Blues in San Francisco to Highway 99 in Tacoma.) The band plays a rollicking style of rock with the crash-energy Kolvane blasting around the stage and Louisiana keyboard monster Steve Kerin rattling the room with his boogie woogie.

Landmark debut!
LLOYD JONES

Portland's premier bluesman, four decades of gritty, beguiling music

Jones got his start in the '70s Portland band Brown Sugar and learned his craft as backup for touring performers such as Charlie Musselwhite, Johnny Otis, Big Mama Thornton and the like. In the 80's he joined forces with Curtis Salgado in a band called Yo' Face, then built the Lloyd Jones Struggle after Salgado left to join Roomful of Blues. His late 80's records won over a dozen local music awards, as well as acclaim from national music publications such as Down Beat and Guitar Player, which in turn led to some extensive touring under a Miller Beer Sponsorship Program. In 1995. Blues Revue called his release "Trouble Monkey" "one of the best albums of the 1990's." Jones and his band have become a mainstay on the West Coast circuit and toured from New Orleans to Canada to the Caribbean. Along the way he's played with Albert Collins, Robert Cray, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, B.B. King, Dr. John, John Hammond, Etta James, Junior Wells and Buddy Guy. He's making his long-overdue Landmark debut.
