JERRY & THE STAGEHOGS

The smooth sounds from Jerry and the bluest hogs around

Jerry and the Hogs give off a kind of glow when they perform under the red of the Landmark lights. But it's not the spotlights that make this band so lush, it's the tightness of the arrangements and Jerry's satin voice. The band has recently added Blue Owens, harp player extraordinaire, an addition that only makes the band better. And watch for Jerry's other projects through the year.

THE BLUERUNNERS

From Lafayette, Louisiana, a blend of zydeco and Cajun swamp boogie

This is the real deal. "Zydeco bounce, voodoo blues, the rugged poetry of Cajun living and loving," says Rolling Stone, reviewing the Bluerunners' newest album. Katrina only deepened the appreciation of the music that comes from south Louisiana. Rarely does a band like this make it to Yachats, so don't you dare miss it.

HOOKAH STEW

John Michael Young can play them all -- and does: funk, blues and rock

Some performers of the electric guitar stay outside the instrument; others, like the leader of Hookah Stew, go inside. John Michael Young formed this band 10 years ago and gave it a crash course of Cherry Poppin' Daddies, Aquarium Release and the Five Fingers of Funk. Some Stevie Wonder and a lot of Hendrix has rounded the sound in the past few years. Just ask him and he'll probably be able to play it. The band will start before dark and take a break during the fireworks, then play on afterward.

PAPAW'S BLUE JELLY BAND Rockin' blues from Corvallis veterans

This is a band that has been playing together for over a decade and it shows in the tightness of the covers and the quality of the originals. Jonathan Carroll is a New Yorker guitarist playing counter to David Bryant, who hails from Clarksdale, Miss. Somehow the mesh is no mess and out comes everything from Hendrix's "Little Wing" to Buddy Guy's "Heavy Love."

It promises some alt country and mention some stompin' feet and the likes of Robert Earl Keen, Whiskeytown, Phish and Steely Dan. There is also an Americana sense about this band and here they conger up Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle. We'll see what we will see.

TRUCKSTOP HONEYMOON Blue grass vaudeville from Mike West, a true New Orleans original

When Mike West used to sing about the Industrial Canal running past his house in New Orleans, people laughed. Now, of course, post-flood, they cry. Mike and his bride, Katie Euliss, have been on the road pretty much all the time since Katrina, still laughing, we assume. And with new songs that reflect the new reality, it would be mistake to miss this one.

THE ORIGINAL SNAKEBOY

As close to the Delta as you¹ll get -- award winner

Says one critic, "Raised in New Orleans, Snakeboy plays in an unforced and magnificent way the raw sound from the deep south of America, the Delta Blues." Covers come from Son House's "Preachin' Blues", Robert Johnson's "Come On In My Kitchen" and Muddy Waters' "Can't Be Satisfied". His own material evokes Hawaiian moods and a taste of the forest. He won first place at the National Slide Guitar Festival in Gray, Tenn., in 2000.

Sizzling' blues guitar from a young man on his way up

In the four years 20-year old Jake Blair has played at the Landmark we've had the pleasure of watching the development of guitar sizzle at its cleanest. Jake is a juke box of things he's heard, things he's experienced through the sound and things he can spit back with his own slash and drive. He's settled into this three-piece band, where distractions few and the riffs just roll on.

SONNY HESS & LISA MANN Acoustic blues from Portland duo

Smokin' Sonny Hess broke into the Portland scene as the hottest female guitar player in the Northwest. She has since won Muddy awards, played with the best, led bands both big and small. Here she appears with a former member of one of her bands and together Sonny and Lisa play a blues that is all finesse; a sound that crawls around the edges of the songs, giving in to the lyric only at the last minute.
